Reagan’s “A Time for Choosing”
This Ronald Reagan Campaign Address for Barry Goldwater Presidential Campaign was presented on October 27, 1964. Reagan draws the line between the two major political philosophies with real life examples that he delivers with passion. Reagan explains, “its not that our liberal friends are ignorant, it is that they know so much that isn’t so,” Reagan cuts through false accusations. Accusations such as conservatives being uncaring, which is patently false. Reagan explains that liberals have good intentions but with those good intentions long term results in un-thought-of consequences.
Listen to Ronald Reagan’s 29 minute speech with the 2010 Fall election in mind. It’s not right versus left, but right vs wrong. Reagan’s speech is timely and rings true today. Here are some of my favorite excerpts from Reagan’s “A Time for Choosing” speech.
Cuba is a Failed Government
Fidel Castro earlier this year made a Freudian Slip when he said his economy had failed. Indeed the Castro socialist government has failed. Cuba has failed its people by eliminating political freedom and the right to own one’s labor. Cuba now plans to lay off a half-million workers – 10 percent of its workforce. Now, for the first time, Cuban nationals are being encouraged to become mini-capitalists, to open small businesses. In his speech, President Reagan tells of an immigrant from Cuba who considers himself lucky to be in America and not Cuba. This story could have been told today, nearly a half century later. Here Reagan proves his point that conservative values are seen as good while people run from socialist Cuba. Here are Reagan’s words about Castro and Cuba:
“I think its time we ask ourselves if we still know the freedoms that were intended for us by the founding fathers. Not too long ago 2 friends of mine were talking to a Cuban refugee, a business man who had excaped from Castro. And in the midst of one of his stories, my friends turned to the other and said, ‘we don’t know how lucky we are.’ And the Cuban stopped and said, ‘How lucky YOU are, I had some place to escape to.’ In that sentence he told us the entire story. “
America Sovereignty and Freedom
We lose our freedom everyday. The freedom to choose a job that is unrestricted by taxes, fees and affirmative action. These burdens are nothing more than obstructions to your freedom to choose your work and fully benefit from the fruits of your own labor. The playing field is not level. Often times it is skewed against the very people government needs to help, those earning lower wages. The Obama-Pelosi-Reed government wants to buy your freedom in exchange for your vote. If we lose our freedom to big government, then we lose our way as American people. The American experiment with freedom will be lost.
“If we lose freedom here, there is no place to escape to. This is the last stand on earth. And this idea that government is beholden to the people, that it has no other source of power except the sovergn people, is still the newest and most unique idea in all the long history of man’s relation to man.”
Self Government or Big Government
The issue this fall is Self Government or Big Government. Do we still believe in our capacity to self govern? Or do we want to have politicians control everything in our lives. Obama-Pelosi-Reed want to take over our healtcare, our industries, what we eat, and what we think. Reagan asks the same question 40+ years ago:
“This is the issue of this election. Whether we believe in our capacity for self government or whether we abandon the American revolution and confess that a little intellectual elite in a far distant capital can plan our lives for us better than we can plan them ourselves.”
The assault on freedom must come to an end. This fall, we must send the same message as President Reagan. Listen to his speech with an eye on today. We have fixed nothing, rather we have only made things worse. And we still have our rendezvous with destiny.
“You and I have a rendezvous with destiny, we will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of men on earth. Or we’ll sentence them to take the last step into a thousand years of darkness. “
