Republicans Banned From “Union” Labor Day Parade

August 30, 2011

Remember the “Look for the Union Label” song?

It was by a garment labor union that began in New York City. The song encouraged people to “look for the union label” and buy garments “made in the U.S.A.” The song was popular but it couldn’t help the unions because the problem was that US made garments were much more expensive than overseas garments. Now most garments are made overseas from countries free of labor unions such as China.

Why do you suppose that song didn’t help the garment workers union? Could it be that the US garment industry was no longer competitive with the rest of the world?

What is it about unions these day? Why are they in such decline? Could it be that they no longer represent ‘labor’ in the minds of the common man because of the tactics unions use? Could it be the bankruptcy of whole industries by labor unions is causing union membership decline?

Here’s the latest example of an old tried and failed union methodology to force conformance in everything union:

In Wausau, where you can spell the name of the town without USA, the Marathon County Central Labor Council is telling Republican lawmakers they they are not welcome in their parade.

“It should come as no surprise that organizers choose not to invite elected officials who have openly attacked worker’s rights or stood idly by while their political party fought to strip public workers of their right to collectively bargain,” said Randy Radtke, president of the Council. The Council is made up of about 30 local unions from the Marathon County area. Source 1

Workers rights extend to all workers, not just unions. The labor day parade is a parade for all laborers. “I’m a worker, you’re a worker, we’re not represented by unions. It’s not appropriate for the citizens of the city of Wausau to be deprived of contact with their elected representatives. When I go to these parades, I try to talk with people before the parade actually starts,” said State Senator Pam Galloway

It took the intervention of Mayor Tipple Of Wausau to point to a public policy that would forbid the banning of any political party from participation at any event sponsored by the city. Furthermore, the statement went on to say it is, “not in the best interest of all the citizens of the City of Wausau.” Source 2

Over and over again, unions demonstrate they are a group that has to bully to get its way. Here’s a news flash to unions, it ain’t working! Your bankrupting our country, our counties, our cities. Public unions do more harm than good to the general financial welfare of non-public-union folks. In the long run, there will be no unions because that’s right where we are heading. And the unions are only speeding things up with brutal behavior.
